Sarah F. Whiting


Sarah Whiting serves as Executive Director at St. John’s Church Foundation, a position she has held since 2012. Under the direction and guidance of the Board of Trustees, she is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization, whose mission is to spark a global appreciation for understanding the role that Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty” speech had in setting America on the path to liberty, and to ignite the public’s commitment to preserving the historic site where it happened.

Ms. Whiting previously served as the Revolving Fund Program Manager and later as the Director of Community Resources and Outreach at Preservation Virginia. Through the Revolving Fund ---- a State-financed trust fund valued at approximately $1.5 million in cash, investments and properties ---- Whiting worked to protect and preserve publicly significant historic properties across Virginia.

She is a graduate of The University of the South.


Amy N. Swartz



Amy Swartz serves as Director of Programs and Preservation and is responsible for overseeing preservation projects and educational programs including the “Give Me History!” Title I Program which has served over 47,000 elementary and middle school students and their teachers in Richmond metro area public schools by providing a free educational program at Historic St. John’s Church.

She previously served as the Director of Preservation Services at Historic Richmond Foundation and was responsible for overseeing the care and adaptive renovation/restoration of historic properties owned by HRF and advocating for protection of historic properties in the Richmond region.

She is a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, with a Master of Fine Arts in Historic Preservation.


Stephen Wilson

Director of Development


Stephen Wilson serves as Director of Development at St. John's Church Foundation and is responsible for increasing philanthropic support to the organization. He previously served as Director of Annual Giving at Virginia State University and Director of Annual Fund and Alumni Relations at Richard Bland College of William & Mary. 

Wilson has twenty years of private sector, C level sales experience, primarily with Fortune 1,000 firms. He is the Owner of River City Hospitality, LLC, an award winning VIP corporate hospitality firm specializing in major sports events. He is past owner of Colony Realty, LLC, a real estate company that generated income via corporate rentals.

He is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington and Richard Bland College of William & Mary, and is pursuing a certificate in Urban Agriculture from Virginia State University.


Sarah M. White



From 2004-2009, Sarah led the Customer Support Team at ExploreLearning, training clients to use interactive learning tools. Subsequent work at web design and branding company Convoy developed her skills leading projects, communicating between clients and programmers, and training new product users.  In 2014, Sarah joined the team at St. John’s Church Foundation where she oversees the daily operations at the historic site and Visitor Center, including tour, reenactment, and special event scheduling, technical and web infrastructure, and financial reporting.

She is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a Masters in English and American Studies.  She also has a side-career as award-winning singer-songwriter Sarah White.  


Charles Wissinger


Charles Wissinger is a professional actor who loves history. A graduate of Ferrum College with a B.A. in Theatrical and Performing Arts, he has worked on stage, in films, television, and commercials. Wissinger has combined his love for acting with his love for history by researching and creating interpretations of historical figures from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World War II, and has been seen on Fox News Channel, HBO, PBS, The History Channel, The Military Channel, National Geographic, The American Heroes Channel, and The Discovery Channel. 

Wissinger joined the cast at Historic St. John's Church in 2003. In addition to acting, he currently researches and sews historical clothing for LionHeart Filmworks, St. John's Church Foundation and The Berkeley Plantation Thanksgiving Festival. Wissinger is very proud to be working with SJCF and the great group of people that keep educating through entertainment. 


Raymond Baird


Raymond Baird serves as Lead Interpreter, providing costumed tour guides into the church to hear the story of Patrick Henry and St. John’s in the heady days on the eve of the American Revolution.

After retiring from Verizon in 2002, he became active in Civil War reenactments and appeared in the film Gods and Generals. He also started his own tour company, Richmond Revealed.

When he is not at St. John’s he can be found exploring graveyards in Southwest Virginia as he searches for Patrick Henry’s family. He is a lifetime resident of Richmond, VA and is married to the lovely Annette Martin Baird of Clifton Forge, VA.


Alexa Mendieta

Development Assistant

Alexa Medieta provides administrative support to the Office of Development and Operations.

Ms. Mendieta previously served as a Communication Intern at Art 180 and as a Student Manager at Boatwright Cafe.

She graduated from the University of Richmond in 2018 with a B.A. in Rhetoric and Communication Studies.
