Sarah F. Whiting


Sarah Whiting has served as Executive Director of St. John’s Church Foundation since August 2012.

From 2006 to 2012, Whiting was the Revolving Fund Program Manager and later the Director of Community Resources and Outreach at Preservation Virginia. Through the Revolving Fund — a State-financed trust fund valued at approximately $1.5 million in cash, investments, and properties — Whiting worked to protect and preserve publicly significant historic properties across Virginia. 

Whiting held multiple positions at the Historic Richmond Foundation from 1999 to 2006, including Project Manager, Director of Development and Special Projects, and Managing Director. While serving at HRF, Whiting raised money for the multi-phase restoration of Monumental Church, a National Historic Landmark, gathering federal, state, and local grant funding and donations from private individuals. Whiting oversaw restoration Phases I and II of the church, and served as Project Manager for the Monument Replication Project, an international effort of scientists, artisans, and conservators to recreate the damaged marble memorial at Monumental Church.


Amy N. Swartz



Amy Swartz holds a Master of Fine Arts in Historic Preservation from Savannah College of Art and Design. She was previously employed by Historic Richmond Foundation as the Director of Preservation Services, responsible for overseeing the care and adaptive renovation/restoration of historic properties owned by HRF and advocating for protection of historic properties in the Richmond region.

Mrs. Swartz was the Restoration Coordinator at Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, where she was responsible for overseeing the care of the cemetery including masonry and headstone repair, cleaning and maintenance.


Stephen Wilson

Director of Development


Stephen Wilson serves as Director of Development at St. John's Church Foundation and is responsible for increasing philanthropic support to the organization. He previously served as Director of Annual Giving at Virginia State University and Director of Annual Fund and Alumni Relations at Richard Bland College of William & Mary. 

Wilson has twenty years of private sector, C level sales experience, primarily with Fortune 1,000 firms. He is the Owner of River City Hospitality, LLC, an award winning VIP corporate hospitality firm specializing in major sports events. He is past owner of Colony Realty, LLC, a real estate company that generated income via corporate rentals.

He is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington and Richard Bland College of William & Mary, and is pursuing a certificate in Urban Agriculture from Virginia State University.


Sarah M. White



Sarah White hails from Charlottesville VA, the town invented by Thomas Jefferson.  Sarah's interest in the Civil War led her to Richmond where she was quickly consumed by the history of the City, including Historic St. John's Church and the American Revolution.  

From 2004-2009, Sarah led the Customer Support Team at ExploreLearning, training clients to use interactive learning tools. Subsequent work at design and branding company Convoy developed her skills leading projects, communicating between clients and programmers, and training new product users.  In 2014, Sarah joined the team at St. John’s Church Foundation where she enjoys watching over the historic site (and website), the Visitor Center, the groups and schools that come to visit, and the bottom line.  From the on-site experience to our online presence, Sarah works behind the scenes to make sure that all of our visitors have a 5-star experience.   

Sarah has a Masters in English and American Studies from the University of Virginia.  She also has an above-ground career as award-winning singer-songwriter Sarah White.  


Charles Wissinger


Charles Wissinger is a professional actor who loves history. A graduate of Ferrum College with a B.A. in Theatrical and Performing Arts, he has worked on stage, in films, television, and commercials. Wissinger has combined his love for acting with his love for history by researching and creating interpretations of historical figures from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World War II, and has been seen on Fox News Channel, HBO, PBS, The History Channel, The Military Channel, National Geographic, The American Heroes Channel, and The Discovery Channel. 

Wissinger joined the cast at Historic St. John's Church in 2003. In addition to acting, he currently researches and sews historical clothing for LionHeart Filmworks, St. John's Church Foundation and The Berkeley Plantation Thanksgiving Festival. Wissinger is very proud to be working with SJCF and the great group of people that keep educating through entertainment. 


Raymond Baird


A lifetime resident of the Richmond area, Ray has a passion for American History, especially the history of Richmond.  After retiring from Verizon in 2002, Ray became active in Civil War reenactments, appeared in the film 'Gods & Generals', and eventually started his own tour company "Richmond Revealed".  After joining the team at Historic St. John's Church, Ray discovered a new passion: Patrick Henry and the Revolutionary War.  When not at St. John's, Ray can be found exploring graveyards in Southwest Virginia as he searches for Patrick Henry's family.  Ray is married to the lovely Annette Martin Baird from Clifton Forge, Virginia.
